Keynote Address: Non-Invasive Clinical Applications of Fractional Laser Treatments in Airway Disorders and Practical Patient Protocols

Airway disorders in both adults and children have emerged as a critical area of focus in general dentistry. As awareness grows around the impact of sleep-disordered breathing, dentists are increasingly positioned to collaborate with medical professionals in diagnosing and treating conditions such as snoring and Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA).

This keynote presentation will explore the expanding role of laser technology in addressing airway-related issues, particularly the use of non-invasive fractional laser treatments for snoring and other breathing disorders. Both pediatric and adult cases will be discussed.

A key driver behind this growth opportunity in dentistry is the increasing public and professional awareness of the long-term health risks associated with untreated OSA—including its links to cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes, stroke, cognitive decline, and emotional health issues such as anxiety and depression. In addition to conventional therapies (e.g., oral appliances), lasers are now being recognized as effective adjuncts or alternatives for minimally invasive intervention.

Key Topics Covered:

  • The science and clinical rationale behind fractional laser treatment for snoring
  • Patient selection: indications, contraindications, and limitations of treatment
  • Integration of laser protocols into the dental practice
  • The dentist’s role in improving patient quality of life—restful sleep, mood, cognition, and more
  • Use of imaging and photography in diagnosis, treatment planning, and documentation
  • Review of alternative technologies and wavelengths, including how lasers compare
  • Office-based, minimally invasive laser procedures for snoring and related conditions in both children and adults

With tens of millions affected by snoring and its complications, this keynote will provide attendees with the clinical insight and tools to recognize, assess, and treat airway disorders—positioning dental professionals at the forefront of interdisciplinary care in sleep and airway health.

Expanded Clinical Applications of Dental Lasers:

This program will cover a range of additional clinical procedures that can be performed using lasers designed for sleep disorder treatments. These include, but are not limited to, virtually bloodless soft tissue surgeries, periodontal therapy and surgery, and laser applications in implantology—particularly for the treatment of peri-implantitis. Attendees will gain the knowledge needed to make informed decisions about integrating the most versatile laser technologies into their dental practice.

Minimally Invasive Soft Tissue Procedures for General Dentistry:

· Soft tissue management and coagulation

· Gingivectomy and gingivoplasty

· Operculectomy and excisional biopsy

· Vestibuloplasty and tissue troughing

· Treatment of hemangiomas, ulcers, lesions, and more

Periodontal and Implant-Related Applications:

· Non-surgical and surgical periodontal therapy

· Laser use in implant maintenance

· Treatment of peri-implantitis and peri-mucositis

Specialty Applications:

· Infant tongue-tie releases (frenectomy)

· Facial aesthetic procedures as adjuncts to cosmetic dentistry

Participants will also explore how to harness the precision and effectiveness of fractional CO₂ laser energy—the gold standard in facial aesthetics—to profitably expand their practice with minimally invasive aesthetic treatments.

Hands-On Training Segment:

This interactive portion of the program offers participants the chance to experience laser technology firsthand, performing various surgical procedures on in-vitro models. A live demonstration, supported by instructional videos, will highlight key techniques and laser settings for optimal clinical outcomes.

Hands-on activities include:

· Techniques for incision, excision, coagulation, disinfection, and promoting healing

· Office-based, minimally invasive treatments for snoring

· Operative laser dentistry: tissue troughing, fibroma removal, biopsies, gingivectomy, frenectomy, vestibuloplasty, aphthous ulcer treatment, periodontal surgery, surgical flaps, de-epithelialization, and more

Additional Focus Areas:

· Laser safety protocols

· Device settings and customization

· Maintenance, sterilization, and system care

This course also encourages active participation and one-on-one interaction with the instructor, allowing attendees to discuss clinical and practical strategies for successfully integrating dental laser technology into their practices.

Course Objectives

  • An understanding of the fundamental science including absorption characteristics and corresponding tissue interactions of different laser wavelengths
  • Learn the role and importance of working together with clinicians in identifying sleep disorders, recognizing their symptoms, co-morbidities, educating patients, case selection, diagnosis, treatment limitations and working with co-therapies,
  • An understanding of how and which dental laser technologies can be incorporated to treat airway disorders including snoring and other symptoms of Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA)
  • Become familiar with the various sleep studies, sleep disorder evaluation systems and protocols to evaluate clinical outcomes
  • An understanding of clinical indications for use, case selection and patient management
  • Learn about additional procedures which can be performed using the same laser(s) used for airway disorder procedures including; general dentistry, perio therapy and surgery, surgical implantology, periimplantitis treatments and facial aesthetic procedures.
  • An understanding of the benefits of laser technology and how to successfully implement lasers into the practice to the benefit of the clinician, staff and patients, including patient education and marketing initiatives and return on investment considerations
